Footwork Is the Invisible 70%: What Your Feet Do Before You Hit the Ball

Video review of 4.0+ club matches reveals 70–80% of every technical error traces back to the split-step, first step, or recovery step — not the stroke itself.

The split-step timing window

Elite players land their split-step exactly as their opponent contacts the ball. Landing late means moving from a static stance, which is ~20% slower than moving from a pre-loaded split.

The first step: direction > speed

75% of return errors at the 3.5–4.0 level come from an initial step that moves away from the ball or straight forward instead of cross-court.

Recovery: the shot you're not thinking about

Most players run with their chest forward, losing 2–3 meters per 4-ball exchange compared to players who use a controlled cross-over step.

Action Step

Dedicate the first 15 minutes of your next practice exclusively to split-step timing.
